The City Is An Organism

The concept of the city as a living organism has been pointed out for quite a long time now.  And, though this methaporic definition of the city presents several limitations, it is quite convincing in some way. For example, the basic characteristics of a living organism such as growth, development and homeostasis are also exhibited by the city.

The city can grow either in population size or in terms of territorial size. It is a given that population size all over the world grow exponentially. It is but natural. In terms of territorial size, he city grows through various ways: either through land reclamation or probably through the merging of several areas together via legislative measure such as laws and ordinances. In terms of homeostasis, a city has a self-correcting mechanism although not very natural by itself. This self-correcting mechanism is manifested by the people in the government. Whatever mistakes we made in the past, we try to counter.

Jane Jacobs and Sidewalks

These days, a lot of planners are obsessed with the concept of the Garden City. Jane Jacobs, an American-Canadian writer and activist was actually one of those people who didn’t buy the idea of a Garden City and urban renewal a hundred percent. In her published book entitled “The Life and Death of Great American Cities”, she narrated her experiences in her hometown.

She was not in love with the idea of the garden city simply because she thought that the characteristics of the garden city, though tantalizingly tempting, actually pose several safety concerns. The most important thing she pointed out is the existence of busy sidewalks which is not one of the characteristics of the Garden City.

She remains to be one of the most influential people in the field of urban planning even when she was not professionally trained in city planning.  She is greatly remembered through her published books which includes “The Life and Death of Great American Cities”, “The Economies of Cities”, and a lot more.

The Outstanding Features of the Industrial Revolution

The industrial revolution changed everything for the world. Without it, people would not be able to experience the different conveniences and amenities that they are experiencing now. To say the least, the industrial revolution was the mother of almost everything: from bright minds to great machines.

In truth, the Industrial Revolution is characterized by several outstanding features, namely: rapid population, increase in acreage of land used for cultivation, rapid increase in capital, large number of entrepreneurs and inventors, and the specialization of work.

The rapid increase in population during those times is not an offshoot of an increase in birth rate. Rather, it was caused by the fall in mortality rate due to the improvements in medicine and surgery. The rapid increase in capital caused the emergence of the banking system.

Even though the industrial was short-lived, it effectively left an imprint in the world history due to the numerous transformations that occurred.
