Screen saver

A simple heel prick is the best gift your baby can receive at birth. Newborn screening or NSB is a simple medical procedure to check if your baby has a congenital metabolic disorder such as Phenylketonuria or PKU, Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia or CAH, Congenital hypothyroidism, and Galactosemia. If these left untreated, it could lead to mental retardation and even death.

Babies with genetic disorder may appear healthy at birth. Through newborn screening, the diseases are diagnosed and treated early and subsequent medical problems and complications are prevented. Newborns should have the test before hospital discharge, usually at the 48th hour of life. Babies who were not born in the hospital should be brought to a clinic that offers newborn screening within the first week of life.

Bread has the fiber we need.

Recently, fiber has become a buzzword among heath circles. For most, dietary fiber is found primarily in lean meats and plant food like vegetables, root crops and grains.

A good amount of fiber in out diet has been scientifically proven to help prevent certain cardiovascular diseases like heart disease and high blood pressure. Sufficient fiber intake is also important for a healthy and balanced digestive system. Lack of fiber has been observed in certain cancers of the digestive system including colon cancer.

Proper diet and balanced nutrition should pay attention to all sources of dietary fiber. Dietary fiber is either the digestible and non-digestible carbohydrate found in food. Non-digestible fibers, like plant fibers and grains, help the body naturally flush or get rid of toxins and other non-essentials that we often ingest through foods.

Among grains products, bread is probably the most convenient and most available source of dietary fiber. Bread is often listed in the top fiber foods, together with other grain products. The fiber is bread comes from wheat flour, which is a key ingredient in the production of bread. Wheat flour is an excellent source of fiber, and bread contains a significant amount of dietary fiber.

By eating bread, Filipinos can actually help correct the inadequacy in their diet and also help them achieve normal bowel movement and normal bowel habits, leading to a healthier, toxins-free body.

Help your body flush out toxins by eating bread regularly. With bread, you’re better fed.

THE IMPORTANCE OF CALCIUM CARBONATE

Osteoporosis is a silent disease, slow and gradual. It stealthily makes bones weak, brittle, and prone to fracture. Osteoporosis afflicts not only the elderly. It can strike very early on, with your diet and lifestyle possibly putting you at risk. You may be severely losing bone minerals density (BMD) without realizing it. Women are more prone to osteoporosis. Women are more prone to osteoporosis.

The good news is that this silent disease is preventable and treatable. All you need is the right amount of calcium in your system. But even a healthy, balanced diet with high calcium content may not be enough.

Calcium Carbonate gives you what you need to strengthen your bones. With 500mg of elemental calcium is an easy-to-swallow soft gel capsule, such as calci-aid., provides the calcium needed to effectively reduce bone loss.

It takes more than just fashion to make you look and feel good. Without proper posture and strong bones, a great dress is useless. Wear that fabulous outfit and exude confidence from within.

TIPS FOR A HEALTY HEART (part )

Hypercholesterolemia or dyslipidemia results from increase intake of fatty foods especially those derived from animal sources.
LDL cholesterol or the bad cholesterol is the main culprit in antherosclerosis or hardening of the blood vessels. It is the prime target for cholesterol lowering interventions.
Among patients with metabolic syndrome or frank diabetes mellitus, elevated triglyceride and low HDL-cholesterol (the good cholesterol) are the common lipid abnormalities.
These lipid abnormalities respond to dietary modification (low fat intake) and regular aerobic exercise.
For the non-responders to these interventions and for those who are considered high risk, drug intervention may be required=.
The role of HDL or good cholesterol needs to be emphasized as well.
HDL is involved in the so-called reverse cholesterol transport where it plays a role in the transporting bad cholesterol (LDL-cholesterol_ form blood vessel wall back to the liver for excretion.

TIPS FOR A HEALTY HEART (part 2)

They have slight blood pressure elevation, impaired fasting blood glucose, dylipidyenia and abdominal obesity.
Clustering of these abnormalities in one individual gives him 2-4 times the risk of developing CVD.
Tips for healthy heart are therefore directed at addressing the modifiable risk factors.
Fortunately, lifestyle modification can correct most of the risk mentioned.
Diet and exercise are know to have beneficial effects on hypertensive ( Both systolic and diastolic), obesity ( through burning of calories) and duslipidemia and elevated blood sugar ( through insulin effect).
Nicotine from cigarette smoke is addicting and has deleterious effect on the cardiovascular system.
It causes blood vessels to constrict, aggravates hypertension and triggers chest pain in those with established coronary artery disease.
Chronic obstructive lung disease and lung cancer are the other non-cordiac sequelea of chronic smoking.
Avoidance of smoking and smoking cessation are advised to those who are addicted to nicotine to gain or regain the benefits from nicotine abstinence.

TIPS FOR A HEALTY HEART

Choose your parents,
Be a female.
If you are a female, delay your menopause.
Don’t grow old.
These may well be the best advice I could give to anyone to prevent developing cardiovascular disease.
Age, male sex, bad genes and postmenopausal stage are non-modifiable risks that even doctors cannot change.
The other risk factor that some of us may have are fortunately modifiable.
Obesity, hypertension, diabetes milletus, dystipidymia, smoking and sedentary lifestyle are the factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD)
People with so-called metabolic syndrome have a bit of these risk factors.
They have slight blood pressure elevation, impaired fasting blood glucose, dyslipidemia and abdominal obesity.
Clustering of these abnormalities in one individual gives him 2-4 times the risk of developing CVD.
Tips for healthy heart are therefore directed at addressing the modifiable risk factors.

MODERN LIFESTYLE IS HARMFUL TO THE SPINE

In recent years, people’s living standards and work environment has greatly improved, but due to accelerating pace of living, increase in work pressure and sedentary lifestyle, waist and back disease is growing at a remarkable rate. Four out of five adult have at least one bout of back pain sometime during their life. In fact, pain is the most common reasons for health care visits and missed work.

* 5 Harmful Habits *

  • Twisting when lifting

So many people do not bend their knees and even twist when lifting heavy objects.

  • Obesity and lack of exercise

Excess body weight, especially around the wrist, weak muscles and less flexibility can lead to back pain.

  • Smoking Tobacco

Nicotine blocks the transport of oxygen and important nutrients to the spine’s disc. Starved of oxygen, the discs are much less able to repair themselves and tend to collapse at a much earlier age than is seen in non-smokers. This degenerative disc disease can lead to chronic back pain.

  • Bad posture

Slouched shoulders, head down, knees locked places an enormous amount of stress on the spine

  • Ignoring the pain

If back pains are left untreated or allowed to progress, can lead to a severe disability.

  • Other risk factor… Aging

Bone strength and muscle elasticity decreases. Ligaments thicken and disc dry up. Low back pain can be caused by disease such as disc degeneration, lumbar stenosis and spondylolisthesis.

HEALTH PROBLEMS CONNECTED WITH THE SPINE

Unhealthy spine affects the body’s ability to grow and develop appropriately, and to work effectively and efficiently. The health problems thay may be caused by the nerves of the thoracic and lumbar spine are:
• Asthma cough
• Shortness of breath
• Heart problem
• Bronchitis
• Pneumonia
• Influenza
• Muscle spasms
• Sexual dysfunction
• Gall bladder problems
• Liver conditions
• Poor circulation
• Blood pressure problem
• Anemia
• Arthritis
• General stomach problems
• Menstrual troubles
• Indigestion
• Gastritis
• Ulcers
• Detrimental to diabetes condition
• Low immune system
• Nervousness

What is dental plaque?

Dental plaque is a cheese like thin coating of bacteria and food particles that sticks to the teeth and converts dietary sugar to acid. It cannot be rinsed off. It can only be removed by brushing and flossing, and by professional cleaning by dentist.
The longer the plaque is allowed to stick to the teeth, the greater are the chances that it will cause tooth decay and gum disease. Dental plaque can be seen by using a disclosing tablet. This is how it works. After chewing a tablet the plaque left on the teeth is stained a bright pink colour. Further Brushing of the stained areas is needed until the pink stain is removed. This will confirm that all the plaque has been brushed away. Disclosing tablets or solutions should be an integral part of tooth cleaning. They allow us to see how well, or badly we are brushing our teeth. They must not be swallowed.
